Realistic Watercolor Flower Drawing and Painting Tutorial

I’m so glad you are enjoying the drawing and painting series that I’ve been working on so far this year! While I cannot give away ALL of my drawing tips (those are exclusive for my full art courses), I’m excited to be sharing more drawing tutorials that pair with the painting tutorials. It feels more complete and I’m enjoying the creation process more too!

This time we’re going back to my “roots”—flowers, that is! It’s no secret that I LOVE drawing and painting realistic flowers. Really, almost any style of flower, but definitely these beautiful clematis flowers that my photographer, Shanell captured so beautifully during my branding shoot a few years back (juuuust before Baby #4 decided it was time to join the family). We drew the flowers together for Gardentober and I enjoyed the composition so much—a graceful swoosh is always a favorite with me and this was no exception. It wasn’t long before it became clear that I NEEDED to watercolor these beautiful flowers. Not only because I love the original photograph, but also because the drawing resonated with so many of you. I’m so honored to be able to create artwork that you enjoy and brings a sense of peace to your life.

ANYWAY, I’ve been babbling on long enough! I think it’s time to dive into these step by step drawing and watercolor painting tutorials. Do let me know what you would be interested in seeing as part of this realistic drawing/painting series (I have another bird coming soon and a colored pencil floral coming soon!)

First up the drawing: the key to realistic watercolor painting with ease is a good drawing. If you drawing isn’t clear then you will struggle to capture the detail. Be sure to spend the extra time with your drawing, you won’t regret planning for your future watercolor bird painting!
