Learn Oil Pastel Drawing Techniques with Me!

Isn’t it funny how you can be opposed to something your entire life and then suddenly be drawn to it like moth to a flame? That is exactly the relationship I have had with oil pastels! I’ve dabbled with them in the past, decidedly disliking chalk pastels (I can’t stand the way they feel) and not appreciating the lack of control I had with oil pastels. Overall, if it was held like a crayon, I tossed it to the side with disinterest and maybe even distaste in my expression.

Something happened a few months ago and oil pastels have been on the mind ever since! I don’t know if it was my mental draw back to oil painting as my time and ability to undertake the medium fell even farther from my grasp, or if I saw someone use high quality oil pastels. Regardless of the main source, I was starting to daydream about using oil pastels. I finally decided to try a high quality oil pastel, saw the price, choked and disregarded the experiment in favor of a small starter kit of 12 colors.

I’ve played around with the oil pastels in smaller ways, but this is the first piece that I dove in with the hopes of having a (very beginner) product at the end of it. I would still consider this “sketchbook” level work, where the styles of the flowers and techniques vary from flower to flower, but we’re getting somewhere and I can honestly say that I’m very excited to continue to learn how to use oil pastels.
